Impactful Restrictions Due to Covid-19

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has turned into a global human tragedy and economic devastation. Governments have implemented lockdown measures, blocked international travel, and enforced other public containment measures to mitigate the virus morbidity and mortality. As of today, no drug has the power to fight the infection and bring normalcy to the utter chaos. This leaves us with only one choice namely an effective and safe vaccine that shall be manufactured as soon as possible and available to all countries and populations affected by the pandemic at an affordable price.

We all have been affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic. However, the impact of the pandemic and its consequences are felt differently depending on our status as individuals and as members of society. While some try to adapt to working online, homeschooling their children and ordering food, and others have no choice but to be exposed to the virus while keeping society functioning. Our different social identities and the social groups we belong to determine our inclusion within society and, by extension, our vulnerability to epidemics. Lockdowns and curfews to contain the spread of the virus impacted the way children learn, the way their families earn a living, and how safe they feel in their homes and communities. Despite the ongoing threat, countries around the world are starting to lift restrictions. As we question whether we will ever go back to what we once knew to be “normal”, it's worth taking a step back to see how we can build on what we have learned to build back a better world.

I realized that no matter how much time we think we have, at the end of the day, what I came to appreciate was that we simply don’t spend enough quality time with our families. Like us working students and working parents, we do always lack time with our families before, but greatly right now we can see that it has still positive benefits while waiting for the vaccines to cure the world. We, as an Enchild beneficiaries, had a quality time spending and sharing ideas and thoughts through online just to communicate. It is an example of having a hand to hand and quality time with family aside from the individual distance that we have.  Days in lockdown were an opportunity for children to reinvent ways of play and learning, exploring their immediate environment and making the most of what they had available. Building resilience with my family is one way we help us to cope in difficult moments. For me, it is true that this crisis has taken its toll on humanity. However, it also provided an opportunity for generations to unite and perhaps began to shape our younger generations to think differently about their own individual roles and how we as individuals can all contribute in our own way to find a solution to collective problems.
